The Neuro Diagnostic Program at
Spring Mountain Treatment Center is targeted toward youth
that are experiencing difficult out-of-control behavior
problems triggered by a complex neurological disorder in
their brain. Explosive rage behavior, poor impulse control,
irritability problems, mood swings and poor judgment can be
symptoms of a neuro psychiatric disorder in the adolescent.
Developmental brain impairments that are a result of fetal
exposure to drugs or alcohol, lack of oxygen at birth (blue
babies) or “shaken baby syndrome” can all produce neuro
psychiatric disorders whose behavioral problems begin in
early childhood and continue into the adolescent years.
Unfortunately, traditional psychiatric treatment has been
ineffective in treating the adolescent with this emotional
brain dysfunction. Typical medications used in treating
other psychiatric disorders have had little or no benefit in
this patient, because the patient has a short attention span
and poor impulse control. Standard therapy and counseling
have failed as well.
The method applied to neuro psychiatric patients at Spring
Mountain Treatment Center has demonstrated a positive
outcome after discharge by reducing violent behavior,
impulsive episodes, runaway conduct, decreased
re-hospitalizations and incarceration by an average of 85 to
90%. Continuing studies of neuro psychiatric treatment in
short-term acute facilities will remain an on-going process.
A neuro psychiatric diagnosis of an adolescent patient
depends upon assessment of brain function by multifaceted
testing as well as a comprehensive psychological workup.
The program at Spring Mountain Treatment Center is a 14-day
in-patient stay under the direction of the acute services
department.
The diagnostic portion of the program consists of:
